{"id":1104,"date":"2019-11-29T04:16:58","date_gmt":"2019-11-29T09:16:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/samuelrainey.com\/blog\/?p=1104"},"modified":"2019-11-26T09:25:25","modified_gmt":"2019-11-26T14:25:25","slug":"day-5-marriage-thanksgiving","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/samuelrainey.com\/blog\/2019\/11\/day-5-marriage-thanksgiving\/","title":{"rendered":"Day 5: Marriage &#038; Thanksgiving"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>In light of this being the American week of Thanksgiving, I\u2019ll be writing about the power of gratitude in marriage, and the encouragement it gives to relationships.<\/em><br><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/samuelrainey.com\/blog\/2019\/11\/day-1-marriage-thanksgiving\/\" target=\"_blank\">Day 1: The Gratitude Jar<\/a><br><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/samuelrainey.com\/blog\/2019\/11\/day-2-marriage-thanksgiving\/\" target=\"_blank\">Day 2: Gratitude Prayer<\/a><br><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/samuelrainey.com\/blog\/?p=1098\" target=\"_blank\">Day 3: Gratitude Letter<\/a><br><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/samuelrainey.com\/blog\/?p=1102\" target=\"_blank\">Day 4: A Touch of Gratitude<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Lifestyle of Gratitude<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Step 12 in the Big Book of AA says this:&nbsp;\u201cHaving had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to alcoholics, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.\u201d<br><br>Too often we look at marriage as the \u201cthing\u201d that will bring us the peace and happiness that we\u2019ve always longed for. This need is not wrong, but our passivity and relationship to marriage as though it\u2019s a vending machine is what gets us in trouble. <br><br>Great stuff starts happening when we move from looking at marriage as a transaction to a relationship we have to grow.&nbsp;<br><br>The 12-step process is a lifestyle, not a short term event.&nbsp;<br><br>It\u2019s the same is true for gratitude and marriage.&nbsp;<br><br>We must surrender and practice gratitude in order to grow even more gratitude. We must also give it away to others. I\u2019ve seen a surrender to the gratitude process create a spiritual and relational awakening in a lot of people. They then carry that message to their children, friends, and communities.&nbsp;<br><br>The gratitude jar, letter, prayer, and touch that I\u2019ve written about this week are just a few ideas to begin of a gratitude lifestyle. Take these ideas and make them your own. Create new ones.
